MongoDB PHP Driver: Install and Get Started

Traditional relational databases like MySQL often take center stage. However, with the rise of NoSQL databases, MongoDB has emerged as a strong contender for developers building modern, scalable applications. The MongoDB PHP Driver bridges the gap between PHP and MongoDB, allowing integration and database operations.

In this tutorial, you will learn what is MongoDB PHP Driver, how it works, its installation process, and examples to get you started.

What is the MongoDB PHP Driver?

The MongoDB PHP Driver is an official PHP library that provides us tools to interact with MongoDB databases. It serves as a low-level API for managing database connections, running queries, and handling data.

The MongoDB PHP Driver is purpose-built for MongoDB, offering better performance and features tailored to MongoDB’s capabilities.

The driver includes two main components:

  1. MongoDB Extension (php-mongodb): This is core C extension that integrates MongoDB functionality into PHP.
  2. MongoDB Library (composer package): It is a higher-level abstraction built on top of the extension, providing an object-oriented API for developers.

Together, they enable us to work with MongoDB in PHP.

Anyway, let’s move on to the following section to see how to install MongoDB PHP Driver on various operating systems.

Installing the MongoDB PHP Driver

Before go to the code, you need to set up the driver. Installation has two steps: enabling the MongoDB extension and installing the PHP library via Composer.

Installing the MongoDB Extension

To enable the MongoDB extension, follow these steps:

1. Install mongoDB usning PECL in Linux/Mac

Just run the following command:

sudo pecl install mongodb

And then add the extension to your php.ini file:

extension=mongodb.so

You have to restart your web server or PHP-FPM to apply the changes

2. Install mongoDB in Windows

Download the appropriate DLL for your PHP version from the PECL MongoDB page. And then place it in your PHP extensions folder After that, add the following line to your php.ini.

extension=php_mongodb.dll

Restart your web server to apply the changes.

Let’s move onto the following section to understand how to install MongoDB PHP Library.

Installing the MongoDB PHP Library

Here you should use the composer.

composer require mongodb/mongodb

You can start writing code to interact with your MongoDB database once installed.

In the following part, you will see how you can check the installation on your operating system.

Check Installed Extensions

Run the following command in your terminal or command prompt to list installed PHP extensions and confirm the MongoDB driver is installed:

php -m | grep mongodb

If the output includes mongodb, the driver is installed. Create a PHP script (info.php) to verify that the driver is enabled:

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

Access the file in your browser:http://localhost/info.php.

Let’s summarize it.

Wrapping Up

The MongoDB PHP Driver is an important tool for connecting PHP applications to MongoDB databases. By combining the MongoDB extension and library, it provides a way to handle database operations with improved performance.

From installation on various operating systems to verifying its setup, this guide has walked you through the steps necessary to get started. By enabling the MongoDB extension, installing the PHP library via Composer, and verifying the setup with simple commands and scripts, you now have the basics to integrate MongoDB into your PHP projects.
